CMS educator wins grants to improve achievement, women in construction

Phillip O. Berry ACE Academy Coordinator Larry Logan received a $5,000 National Education Association Innovation Grant. Logan is the only recipient from North Carolina .

The grant is given to improve the academic achievement of students by engaging in critical thinking and problem solving that deepen knowledge of standards-based subject matter.

Logan and computer engineering teacher Vincent Mariano will use the money to further their Six Sigma technical training program. The program helps to develop problem solving and statistical analysis and to provide students with marketable skills.

Students receive lectures on the Six Sigma methodology, a cutting-edge program favored by innovative companies and valued nationally, and attain first-level certification. Applying concepts from the lectures, students participate in catapult, robotics and bridge building competitions, a school dugout construction project, and internships that investigate engineering improvement opportunities within the school or business community.

Logan has also received a $3,000 grant from Women in The Trades to support education for women in construction. WTT Charities Inc. provides grants to programs assisting women entering the construction industry. Logan is using the grant with several women in the school’s construction program. The students are working on design and construction of scale models, utility houses and outdoor projects to enhance their knowledge of the construction industry.
