Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade
Saturday January 13, 2006, Charlotte became the latest city to
have a street named in honor of the late Bro. Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. Brothers from Beta Nu Lambda were instrumental in making this dream a reality.
To show support for this honor, over 100 brothers turned out for the annual MLK Day Parade.
In addition, the chapter's step team took first place in the

Spotlight: Bro. Dedrick Russell
Bro. Russell's 10 part series "The Troubled Ten" won the national Sigma Delta
Chi award for Public Service in Television Journalism. The series focused on
the 10 worst high schools in CMS and the plans that principals had to improve
the performance the schools and kids.
Today we've learned that his series also received 2nd place in the Green
Eyeshade Awards for General News Reporting. The Green Eyeshade is a south-east
regional competition sponsored by the Society for Professional Journalists.
The SPJ maintains very high standards of excellence in journalism and community
service through reporting. To be recognized in either award program is a huge
honor.

Spotlight: Bro. Larry Logan
CMS
educator wins grants to improve achievement, women in
construction

The
grant is given to improve the academic achievement of
students by engaging in critical thinking and problem
solving that deepen knowledge of standards-based subject
matter.
Logan
and computer engineering teacher Vincent Mariano will use
the money to further their Six Sigma technical training
program. The program helps to develop problem solving and
statistical analysis and to provide students with marketable
skills.
Students
receive lectures on the Six Sigma methodology, a
cutting-edge program favored by innovative companies and
valued nationally, and attain first-level certification.
Applying concepts from the lectures, students participate in
catapult, robotics and bridge building competitions, a
school dugout construction project, and internships that
investigate engineering improvement opportunities within the
school or business community.

The 2006 March of Dimes WalkAmerica Campaign was by all measures a huge success. The BNL Walk team raised well over $7000.00, far surpassing our goal of $3000.00.
Special thanks go out to the brothers of Spring 2K6 for their leadership of this project. In particular Bros. Seldric Blocker, Tim Pride and Michael Simms.
Spotlight:
The '06 Crew would like to thank everyone for coming out to the
Brevard Court Sundries last week. Both nights were tremendously successful. We
hope that you had a great time hanging out with us and the stars at CIAA.
Superstar Steve Harvey and his nephew Tommy stopped in to hang out with the
bruhs. Look for bigger and better things next year.

Spotlight: Bro. James Worsley wins prestigious Innovative Program Award for the NC Recreation & Parks Association 1/5/2006
The program called "Young Achievers" was designed and coordinated by James Worsley of the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department. Begun in 2004, it provides recreational and educational experiences for homeless youth during an after-school mentorship program. The program offers recreational and educational activities as an intervention to decrease negative behaviors and attitudes characteristic of homeless children. These children typically exhibit problems such as anger, lack of concentration, poor self-esteem, etc.
Spotlight: BNL Brothers participate in annual NPHC Christmas Service Project 12/9/2005
BNL recently participated in the Charlotte NPHC's annual Christmas Service Project on Fri Dec 9, 2005. Residents of the Greenville Community were treated to a Holiday meal complete with all of the trimmings. There was games and activities for the children as well as prizes and a karaoke contest. A good time was had by all.
Spotlight : BNL Brothers Attend Cornell Pilgrimage 11/19/2005
Brothers of Beta Nu Lambda recently journeyed to the Birthplace of Alpha to attend the Cornell Pilgrimage. Bros. Joel Dancy, Densel Fleming and Lester Arnold took the trip to Ithaca, NY to be a part of this once in a lifetime event. Over 700 brothers from all over the country attended the event held on the campus of Cornell University. During the event a monument to the Seven Jewels was dedicated on campus by Alpha and Cornell Officials.
Spotlight : BNL Chapter 9/10/2005
Brothers of Beta Nu Lambda showed up in force on Saturday September 9 to volunteer at the Salvation Army Hotel on Clanton Rd. Many of the evacuees from Hurricane Katrina are now being housed there and the brothers went to show support and to interact with the displaced children and to donate items towards the relief effort. A good time was had by all during this very worthwhile service project.

Bank of America Announces $1 million gift to the MLK Memorial Project
The Bank of America Corporation recently announced a $1 million gift to the effort to build a monument on the mall in Washington D.C. honoring the slain Civil Rights leader. Bro. R. Shumba Shaver of Beta Nu Lambda led the committee that was responsible for putting everything in place to secure the donation. The chapter and Bro. Shaver in particular will be recognized at the General Convention in Houston, TX for their efforts.

Beta Nu Lambda teams up with the NPHC to help Habitat for Humanity
The brothers of Beta Nu Lambda recently rolled up their sleeves and put on the work boots for a good cause. On Saturday, June 25 the chapter along with chapter from Alpha Kappa Alpha and Sigma Gamma Rho volunteered to put up siding on a new Habitat home. Sixteen brothers gave selflessly of their time and at the end of the day the project was a major success.

BNL & RPO - Health Fair - Alpha & AKA Collaboration
On
BNL (Beta Nu Lambda) and RPO (Rho Psi Omega) contributed $385.00 towards the health fair. The funds collected were used for publicity and lunches for the presenters, as a small token of appreciation. Eastland mall graciously provided us with free rental space and booths for our event. In addition all presenters who participated volunteered at no cost. This event was a great success and we would like to thank all of the brothers who volunteered for this event.

Project Alpha
On Saturday, April 23, 2005, Bro. James Worsley helped to kick off The Project Alpha program at the First Ward Recreation Center located uptown Charlotte. This program was sponsored by The Beta Nu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, March of Dimes, and Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation. This program had well over 200 attendees from local middle and high schools within the Charlotte surrounding areas. The purpose of this event was to teach young teens positive values through interactive workshops. The program was hosted by trained professionals which instructed and lead group discussions on topics such as; social, economic and personal consequences that come with drug abuse, teen-pregnancy. NHPC - Toys for Tots
Congratulations to Bro. Gary Henderson. His daughter Ms. Jasmine Victoria Henderson represented BNL at the NHPC Toys for Tots pageant. She was the 1st runner-up at pageant. She received a standing ovation when she sang "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" as her talent. She received $300.00 savings bond for raising over $3,000.00. All funds raised went towards scholarships for the Charlotte, NC NHPC. - 3/20/05

Regional Convention: - 3/6/05
ANCA brought it home again this year in Atlanta, GA during the 74th Regional Convention. North Carolina's very own, Bro. Everett Ward, from Phi Lambda in Raleigh, NC became our next Regional VP. The race for Regional VP was very close, but Bro. Ward was victorious after the final recount. Eta Omicron - NC State, last year's regional champs repeated again this year after an awesome performance. Kappa Lambda took honors by winning both the Alumni Chapter and Alumni brother of the year. Again congrats to the brothers of ANCA and good luck in Houston, the site of the Alpha National Convention.

Bro. Sean Hunter welcomed a healthy baby boy into the world on February 1, 2005 at 9:39 am. His name is Elijah Hunter, he weighed in at 7lbs. 9oz. Please congratulate Bro. Hunter when you get a moment.

He is now a District Chairman. His functional title is "Chair of District Corporate Sponsorship and Networking Committees".
Computer Access volunteer honored Juan Flowers makes his living in computers. He's a content business manager for Microsoft Corp. in Charlotte, but he also spends volunteer time at the keyboard.
